But red has range; chocolatey brown-reds imbue down-to-earth luxury, while berry hues add a bright acidity. When I was a little girl, my favorite color was red. I guess pink just wasn’t strong enough. Though earth-tones are really my thing, I’ve always had a red accent piece or two in my wardrobe. The color that’s speaking to me now is oxblood, and it’s asking me to lean-in to my girlhood passions and be bold. everything back to the low gracious lines of the original building, and brought back a modern brightness with a softened, organic touch. Our goal was to rest the home unobtrusively but elegantly within its surroundings, and to create a casual but custom feel within. We raised the ceilings in the kitchen, heightening the large windows, and added a walk-in pantry, appliance closet, and temperature-controlled wine room. The kitchen features custom cabinetry, practical porcelain countertops, warm brass hardware, and commercial grade non-slip tile in a matte charcoal hexite pattern. The backsplash is composed of ceramic tile in an crackled glaze with hand-painted accent tiles in watercolor shades of blue-green, which mirror the landscape beyond. We upgraded the appliances, and elevated the finishes to achieve this goal, while creating a flexible work-station in a built-in dining nook that makes the most of the home’s morning light. Custom banquette upholstery and a classic tulip table in the nook are inviting and casual, and offer overflow seating for large gatherings that exceed the formal dining room’s capacity. The owners are a young family looking to update their contemporary mediterranean home with soft color and warm natural textures that mirror the landscape outside. Particularly, the wife wanted florals that felt fresh and clean, so we are using this delft-inspired, hand-painted tile as a jumping off place for the kitchen renovation. Mixed hardware and cabinet finishes create a look that appears layered over time, as do the timeless ceramic lighting fixtures. In the rest of the space, we are adding banquette dining, and a fireplace upgrade that blends mid-century Californian and Mediterranean influences in its tile.
